Man fights for life after city assault

A YOUNG man was fighting for his life last night after he was the victim of a savage assault in Cork city centre, writes Ralph Riegel.

The man, in his late 20s, was discovered unconscious on a footpath at Sullivan's Quay, close to the city centre, at 7.30pm.

He was bleeding from a serious head injury.

Gardai initially feared that the man may have been struck with a heavy, blunt object or had been thrown down stairs.

The victim is understood to have also suffered a minor stab injury to the torso.

The young man was rushed to Cork University Hospital, where he was in a serious but stable condition last night.

Local detectives, who sealed off the scene for forensic examination began house-to-house inquiries last night. They appealed to anyone who was in the Sullivan's Quay area at the time to contact them.
