A man was left fighting for his life last night after he was found unconscious with head injuries on Christmas night.

Gardaí said the man, aged in his late 20s, was found lying on the pavement on St Margaret's Avenue in Waterford city.

He had suffered serious head injuries in what gardaí believe was a fall.

However, they have not ruled out the possibility he was assaulted.

The man was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Waterford where he was described last night as being in a "critical condition".

He was found shortly after 8.30pm and gardaí are seeking information or witnesses from anyone who may have noticed anything in the area around this time.

A Garda spokesman said: "Officers are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding his injuries."

Meanwhile, a man in his 20s is continuing treatment in hospital after he was stabbed on Christmas Eve in an area known as 'The Metals' in Dalkey, south Dublin.
