Man drowns after falling into sea

Alan O’Keeffe

Desperate efforts were made to save the life of a man who fell into the sea from a pier last night.

The 85-year-old man was tying up a vessel at Rathmullen Pier near Buncrana in County Donegal when he slipped off the pier.

A rescue operation began shortly after 10 pm and a lifeboat was launched on Lough Swilly.

The victim, a local man, was recovered from the water at the pier and a passing nurse led efforts to give him CPR.  A ambulance crew arrived and paramedics continued to try to resusitate him but he was pronounced dead later.

It is believed he may also have been injured in the fall from the pier.  His body was taken to Letterkenny Hospital.
