Gardai are investigating the death of a man following a suspected stabbing in Co Offaly on Sunday night.
The dead man, who is aged in his mid 50s, is believed to have suffered stab wounds during an incident a house near Ballyfore, Edenderry at around 8pm.
It’s believed there were three other people in the house at the time.
The man’s body remains at the scene and Gardai have requested the assistance of the State pathologist’s office.
Gardai said a male has been arrested and is assisting gardai with their inquiries.
He is being detained a Tullamore Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
A garda spokesman described the death as “tragic” and said they are not looking to speak with anyone else in relation to the matter.
The garda spokesman said they were investigating a “fatal wounding near Ballyfore and a person has been detained at Tullamore Garda Station in respect of the matter.
Gardai are conducting a preliminary investigation surrounding the death.”
Gardai have sealed off the house and are carrying out examinations.
An incident room has been set up at Tullamore Garda Station.
A conference is expected to take place at Tullamore Garda Station later today.
Members of the Garda Technical Bureau arrived at the property to conduct a forensic examination shortly before 11am.
Later this morning a dog was also removed from the house by Gardai, while a number of evidence bags were also taken from the home.
One local described the death as "a terrible shock" to the area, with the property located on a rural road surrounded by a number of houses.
"I would have known the man to see, it is just a terrible shock. He seemed friendly, they were living there for around 12 years," the local man said.
The body remains at the scene and Gardai are awaiting the arrival of the State Pathologist.
