A MAN has died in a house fire in Co Mayo overnight.

A 65-year-old man died in the fire in an apartment on Station Road, Castlebar on Sunday evening.

He has been named locally as James Gleeson.

Mr Gleeson was alone in the apartment when the fire broke out at 8.30pm.

It is understood that extensive damage was done to the apartment by the blaze. A number of people living in adjoining apartments were evacuated as a result.

The victim was not originally from the area but had lived in Castlebar for many years. His remains were removed to Mayo University Hospital yesterday for a post mortem examination.

Emergency services attended the scene last night after the alarm was raised by a neighbour. Two units of the Castlebar Fire Service attended.

Gardai preserved the scene on Sunday night and a full investigation was carried out yesterday.
