Man dies after being restrained following 'spate of assaults'
Gardai are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a man following a spate of assaults in the Midlands.
A number of people, including two pensioners and a woman, were assaulted in Lanesboro, Co Longford on Monday.
The men, aged in their 70s and 80s, as well as the woman in her 50s, were hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries.
After these assaults a man, known to the female victim, was restrained by a number of bystanders.
Emergency services were alerted and the man was later taken to University Hospital Galway, but passed away on Tuesday.
A post-mortem examination was expected to be carried out last night to determine the exact cause of death.
A senior source last night said that the deceased had underlying health issues and described the case as tragic.
"It was alleged that this individual assaulted a woman, before moving on to a neighbouring house and attacking two pensioners. He was restrained and later died," the source said.
