Man died after being impaled on gate spikes

A 31-year-old man died after he was impaled on a metal gate as he took a short cut home.

Michael Burke, of Carysfort Villas in Dalkey, Co Dublin, was walking home after visiting a friend when the accident happened on January 12 last year.

Mr Burke was taking a short cut through a car park at the Club bar and restaurant in Dalkey when the accident happened.

He suffered a fatal injury as he climbed over 1.3 metre gate at a private house with railings at Ashley House, Convent Road, Dalkey, Dublin Coroner's Court heard. Mr Burke was found by a passing motorist shortly after 8am the following day.

A post-mortem was performed by Dr Marie Cassidy, who found he had suffered a perforating injury to his abdomen. The injury was fully consistent with a fall on spiked railings, she said.

Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane returned a verdict of misadventure.
