Man cuts his throat in front of gardai
GARDAI had to call for armed support after officers investigating a suspected fraud were confronted by a knife-wielding man who later slashed his own throat.
The man, who was rushed to hospital and is now out of danger, confronted gardai after they went to examine documents and computer files as part of their investigation into suspected fraud at a Cork hospital.
It was launched following a formal complaint to gardai from the HSE. The Irish Independent understands the amount involved could reach €300,000.
The probe follows HSE concerns after an audit at the facility highlighted suspected irregularities regarding payments to a supply firm. The HSE confirmed a garda probe was under way but said it could not comment on the details.
