Man critical following incident in Galway housing estate
GARDAI are appealing for witnesses to a row which has left a Polish man fighting for his life in hospital.
The incident happened at the Cullairbaun Estate in Athenry Co Galway last night at around 11.30pm.
A row broke out between a number of men on the green in the estate at between 11pm and midnight last night.
During the incident a 41-year-old Polish man, who had been living in Athenry, received serious head injuries and is currently in a critical condition in University Hospital Galway. Gardai believe he was assaulted with a weapon.
Gardai have this morning cordoned off an area in the estate and are carrying out a technical examination. They are also carrying out a search for the weapon used in the assault.
The majority of those involved in the incident are understood to be Irish men while a smaller number of foreign nationals were also involved.
Superintendent Marie Skehill urged anyone with information on the incident to contact gardai.
"It was a bright night, a lot of people would be still out at that hour and there are a lot of residents in that area, it's a residential area on the Tuam road in Athenry. So any persons who might have any information, let the gardai decide on the value of the information, anything that they feel they may have at all. They may not have witnessed it but they may have some other information surrounding it," she told Galway Bay fm.
Anyone with information is asked to contact gardai at 091 538000, the garda confidential line or any garda station.
