Man comforted after friend dies in house fire

A MAN who tried to rescue a woman who died in a house fire yesterday was being comforted by friends last night.

Aoife Dalton (38), who lived alone, died when her home in Marren Park, Ballymote, Co Sligo, caught fire. The alarm was raised by a neighbour at 5.45am.

Ms Dalton, who was originally from Tralee, Co Kerry, was found in a bedroom by fire crews. She was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem was carried out at Sligo General Hospital last night.

A garda technical team spent yesterday examining the scene. It's understood they believe the fire was an accident, possibly started by a cigarette.

A male friend of the deceased woman, who arrived at the scene, tried to enter the premises to rescue her.

Neighbours said the man, from Sligo town, was "distraught" when he was taken away from the scene.

"She (Ms Dalton) was a quiet woman who kept herself to herself. It is an awful and terrible tragedy," said one neighbour.

"The friend arrived on the scene and tried to go in to rescue her but he couldn't get in. He was in a terrible way."

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
