Man charged with mugging 86 year old woman in Kilkenny

A MAN was today charged in connection with mugging an 86-year-old woman in broad daylight.

Polish national Mariusz Chelstowski (35) appeared before Carlow district court this afternoon.

Chelstowski is accused of robbing Mary Nolan of her purse, which contained €200, while she walked on Walkin Street in Kilkenny city on Monday.

The defendant was first arrested on Monday at 11.35am and conveyed to Kilkenny garda station.

Judge Patrick Clyne heard how when he was formally charged in the early hours of this morning, Chelstowski's reply to the caution was: "I didn't rob €200, I robbed €170."

The defendant, who has no fixed address, was remanded to Cloverhill prison until July 17 when he is due to appear at Kilkenny district court.
