Man charged with IRA membership

A 21-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with membership of the IRA and unlawful possession of a firearm on a Dublin street.

Daryl Mulcahy, of Matt Talbot Court in the city, was brought before the Special Criminal Court.

Det Gda Brian Power of Harcourt Square garda station told the court that he had arrested Mr Mulcahy outside Mountjoy garda station on the North Circular Road yesterday morning.

He said he had arrested him for possession of a firearm under suspicious circumstances the previous day on Temple Street in Dublin and for membership of the IRA on the same occasion.

He said he informed him that the DPP had directed he be brought before the next sitting of the Special Criminal Court charged with the offences and that he made no reply to either charge.

Pistol

He was charged with the unlawful possession of a 9mm Parabellum calibre Beretta Model 9000S semi-automatic pistol contrary to Section 27A of the Firearms Act.

He was also charged with membership of an unlawful organisation, styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA, contrary to Section 21 of the Offences against the State Act.

He again made no reply to either charge, alleged to have taken place on Temple Street on December 4.

Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding, with Judge Margaret Heneghan and Judge William Hamill, remanded Mr Mulcahy in custody to come before the court again on Tuesday.

It is expected a bail application will be made then.
