Man charged in connection with serious assault that left dad (35) fighting for his life

A 34-year-old man has been charged in connection with a serious assault in Co Monaghan.

Seamus Bell (35) was left in a critical condition in hospital after the attack that occurred in Carrickmacross on Saturday night.

According to gardai, Mr Bell was discovered on Main Street in Carrickmacross with a serious head injury at approximately 11.30pm on Saturday night.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and subsequently moved to Beaumont Hospital where his condition is described as critical.

Mr Bell had been on a family day out celebrating his twin daughters’ christening when the attack happened.

Despite undergoing surgery, he was last night still fighting for his life.

A 34-year-old man was arrested by gardai on Sunday, January 21 in connection with the investigation and has since been charged.

He will appear before Virginia District Ct, County Cavan tomorrow the 23rd January 2018 at 10.30am.
