Man bit off nose in pub fight

A man launched a barbaric and unprovoked attack on a New Year's reveller in which he bit part of the man's nose off and then spat it out onto a pub floor.

Father of two Gareth Fitzgerald (32) of Riverside, Rathcormac, Co Cork was handed a two year prison term for an assault described by a the judge as "barbaric ... and savage".

Fitzgerald pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to Kieran O'Leary on January 2 2012.

Mr O'Leary had gone with his wife to the Fob & Gill pub in Mayfield when the unprovoked assault occurred.

Fitzgerald had approached the O'Learys, who he did not know, and passed remarks about the victim's wife.

After the victim objected, Fitzgerald attacked him, warning: "Shut up or I will bite your nose off."

Having bitten a portion of the victim's nose off, Fitzgerald spat it out onto the pub floor and ran off.

The court heard, despite reconstructive surgery, Mr O'Leary is very conscious of the facial damage he sustained.

"He also took a piece of my spirit," he said. "Every time I look in the mirror I find myself looking at my nose and it is a constant reminder. I suffer from nightmares since the assault," he told the court.
