A MAN beaten with hurleys and sticks in a vicious late-night attack has lost his fight for life after spending more than 10 days in intensive care.

Damien Organ (24) was brutally beaten at the People's Park in Waterford on March 21, and was placed on a life support machine shortly after being admitted to hospital.

He died at 5pm yesterday at Waterford Regional Hospital.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later today.

Two men -- Martin O'Brien (20) and Kieran Deegan (19), both with an address at Flat 4, 128 The Quay, Waterford -- have been charged with assault causing harm in relation to the incident and are due back at Waterford District Court on April 13.

Two women who were arrested and questioned at Tramore garda station the day after the incident were later released without charge and a file is being prepared by gardai for the DPP.

Damien's brother, Liam Organ (27), was also beaten during the attack and suffered a broken jaw as well as bruising to the head and body.

The incident which led to Damien's death happened in a wooded, relatively quiet area of the park.
