Man arrested over 'serious' attack was previously questioned about the fatal stabbing of another man

A man arrested over a serious attack on Saturday evening was previously questioned about the fatal stabbing of another man in Kilkenny.

The victim, named locally as Jamie Hennessy (22) from Doonane, Co Carlow, was discovered with serious knife injuries on Love Lane in Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny at around 7pm.

He was taken to St Luke's hospital in Kilkenny where gardaí say he remains in a "critical condition".

Independent.ie understands Mr Hennessy, from Newtown, was stabbed in the neck, chest and legs. Doctors are fighting to keep him alive and one source said medical staff are particularly concerned about the neck wound.

Three men, two in their 30s and one in his 40s, were arrested at the scene and are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Kilkenny Garda Station.

One of the men was previously questioned by gardaí as part of the investigation into the fatal stabbing of Kieran Monahan on Valentine's Day 2012.

Mr Monahan (21) was discovered with fatal knife injuries outside a property in Kilkenny city.

A 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene after he was discovered clutching a bloody knife. However a decision was made not to prosecute after the suspect claimed he was defending his home under the Criminal Law (Defence and the Dwelling) Act 2011.

This man has no connection to the latest incident.

However a second man, a close friend of Mr Monahan, was also questioned as part of the investigation and a source revealed that this man has now been arrested in connection with the attack on Mr Hennessy.

Mr Monahan's family have staged a high profile campaign to have the investigation into his death re-opened.

The scene of this latest attack has been preserved for a technical examination.

A Garda spokesperson said they wish to appeal for witnesses who may have been in the Love Lane area of Castlecomer this evening between 5pm and 7pm to contact them.
