A 31-year-old man has been arrested over the sexual assault of a woman with special needs while she was out jogging.

The man was detained by gardai at 8am in a city centre location in Dublin as part of the investigation into the attack on the woman who was jogging with her mother at the South Circular Road on Wednesday afternoon when they became separated.

The woman, who is in her mid-20s, then returned home about an hour after her mother and told her parents about the assault. She was taken to the sexual assault unit at the Rotunda hospital for treatment.

The incident, described as a “serious sexual assault”, took place in a house in the South Circular Road area between 4pm and 5pm on Wednesday.

The man arrested is being held for questioning at Kevin Street Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He can be questioned for 24-hours.

Investigating gardai had appealed for anyone who might have noticed the woman in the company of a dark skinned man, with black hair and of a medium build.

Gardai had also sought anyone who might have private CCTV cameras in their vehicles, such as taxis, vans or buses, to contact Kevin Street gardai.
