GARDAI arrested a man at Cork Airport after he became extremely distraught and demanded that he be immediately allowed fly to Mecca.

The man, in his 30s and of Middle Eastern origin, became very agitated at the main terminal and refused initially to co-operate with airport security personnel.

Staff were very concerned for the man's welfare.

They became increasingly concerned about his erratic behaviour and his refusal to calm down.

As a precautionary measure, the armed Regional Support Unit were notified but the man was eventually restrained without incident.

The man was not armed but was said to be in a very distressed and confused state.

He was taken for questioning to Togher Garda Station.

However, it is expected that he will be referred for a full psychiatric and medical evaluation.

No-one was injured in the incident and no disruption was caused to airport operations.

Cork Airport does not operate a direct connection with Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Muslims intent on flying to Mecca must make connections via London and Paris airports.
