A man is being questioned by detectives following the discovery of a female pensioner's body in Kilkenny.
Gardaí believe the body of the woman, aged in her 70s, may have been at the property for up to a week.
This morning the scene on Maudlin Street remained sealed off, with garda tape stretched across the front of the small house on Maudlin Street.
The house is situated off the narrow street in the north of the city close to the River Nore.
It is in a group of three houses grouped together accessed by a small flight of steps.
Two Gardai were positioned outside and the victim's body remained at the scene within the house.
Locals described the woman as an independent but vulnerable lady.
She was often seen in the town but had not been spotted out since the weekend, but people were not sure if she was staying indoors owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
Neighbours became aware that something was wrong late yesterday evening when gardai, who appeared to have been acting on information, began calling to houses on the narrow street.
“It seems they had some limited information and were working on that. They were knocking on doors and asking people about neighbours, and somebody must have said that the woman who lives in the house had not been seen,” said one local man.
“Then the gardai went into the house and it was sealed off,” he added.
A man, understood to be from Kilkenny and aged in his late 20s, is being held at Kilkenny garda station after being arrested last night.
Officers are treating the death as suspicious but are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the course of the investigation.
"Gardaí in Kilkenny are investigating the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of a woman in her 70s, whose body was discovered in a house in Kilkenny city this evening," a statement from the press office said last night."
The woman's body has been removed from the scene to Dublin City Morgue, where a post mortem is due to be completed by State Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan later today.
The Technical Bureau remain at the scene and ancillary searches of the area are ongoing.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to this incident to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on 056 7775000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
