A MAN was arrested by gardai this morning after being observed swimming in the Liffey.

Gardai received a call at around 1am reporting a man in the water off Burgh Quay, on the city’s southside.

A concerned member of the public made the call after assuming the man was in distress.

However when gardai arrived they observed a man swimming in the water, and not in any apparent difficulty.

He was arrested under the Public Order Act after being retrieved from the water and detained at Pearse Street garda station.

He was released earlier this morning.

A garda spokesperson confirmed to Independent.ie that the man was unharmed and would appear in court next month in relation to the incident.
