Man arrested after gang spotted on roof of shop
Gardai have arrested a man after a gang were spotted on the roof of a village shop in North Dublin late last night.
Locals spotted the group of men on the top of the Village Stores shop in Lusk just before midnight and contacted gardai.
When a patrol car arrived the men jumped from the roof and fled in different directions.
Gardai managed to chase one man down and arrest him.
He was brought to Balbriggan garda station for questioning and is due in court this morning.
A green Citroen Berlingo van that was parked at the shop was also seized by gardai to establish if it was being used by the gang.
The Village Stores hit the headlines in May 2005 when gardai shot dead two raiders trying to hold up the Post Office within it.
Eric Hopkins and Colm Griffin were killed when confronted by gardai during the raid.
The shop was in the news again when €26,000 was robbed from it in an armed raid in January 2013.
Three men were arrested and the money recovered, however when the shop owner later went to collect the cash from Balbriggan garda station it was discoverd that €9,000 was missing from it.
A garda was later arrested and questioned about the missing cash before being released.
A detective superintendent from Ballymun garda station was appointed to head up an internal inquiry into the missing money.
