A young girl and a male photographer were killed this morning after a car taking part in the Cavan Stages Rally went out of control and ploughed into a group of spectators watching the event.

The two victims were killed at the scene while seven other people were injured, and were taken to Cavan General Hospital. Their injuries are not known.

The incident occurred 2km outside of Bailieborough at around 11.30am.

The rally has now been cancelled and the scene has been sealed off to allow Garda crash scene investigators to carry out an examination of the area.

"Emergency services are at the scene and the road remains closed," said a Garda spokesman.

"The scene is being examined by a forensic collision investigator."

It is understood that the car lost control as it went over a bump on the road and crashed into a fence outside a house where spectators were standing.

The sport is governed by Motorsport Ireland but the event was being staged by Cavan Motor Club.
