Man, 80, saved from ATM theft

A passer-by saved an elderly man who was forced to go to an ATM machine by a burglar and withdraw cash.

The incident happened after a burglary at a house in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, in the early hours of yesterday.

Around 2am at a house on Jubilee Street in the town, a man forced his way into the home of an 80-year-old man and assaulted him.

The raider made the man go with him to a bank machine on Dunlo Street, where he tried to force the victim to withdraw cash.

A member of the public who was passing intervened and the burglar ran away.

Later, in a follow-up operation gardai arrested a man in his 20s, who was detained at Ballinasloe garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. He can be held for up to 24 hours.

The victim was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and has since been released.

Gardai are asking anyone who was in the Jubilee Street or Dunlo Street areas of Ballinasloe between 2am and 3am on Saturday to contact them at Ballinasloe garda station on 090 9631890.
