A 72-YEAR-OLD man died over the weekend following a work accident on his farm.
The dead man, who has been named as John Halpin, was working near his home at Coolroe, Kilmallock, Co Limerick, on Saturday morning when he was struck by heavy machinery.
The operator of the machinery -- understood to be a loading shovel -- did not see Mr Halpin before the incident.
Emergency services were alerted and he was rushed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A Health and Safety Authority investigation into the incident was ongoing yesterday.
The victim was well-known in the area and was good friends with Fine Gael candidate for Limerick County, Bill O'Donnell.
"He was a complete and utter gentleman. It is a complete tragedy for the area," Mr O'Donnell said.
