Tom Brady, Security Editor

A MAN who was assaulted in a pub a week ago has died after failing to regain consciousness. A post-mortem will be carried out today on the body of 60-year-old Laurence McGeown at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda.

The result will determine if garda inquiries into his death will become a murder investigation. Officers arrested a suspect in his 30s in Dundalk on Wednesday afternoon, and he was questioned about the assault throughout yesterday at the local station. Mr McGeown, of Hilltown, Tobermona, Dundalk, was punched in the head during an incident at Fagan's pub at Castletown Road in the town last Friday night.

He was taken by a friend to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital and received treatment there for his injuries and was discharged in the early hours of Saturday.

When his daughter called to his house later in the morning, she discovered his condition had deteriorated and he was taken back into hospital in an unconscious state. Mr McGeown was pronounced dead shortly after 3pm yesterday.
