Man (53) arrested after young man (20s) killed in hit-and-run crash in early hours

A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash that occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A man in his 20s was killed in a collision which took place at around 1am in Kilkenny.

A car collided with a second vehicle on the westbound carriageway of the N24 Piltown bypass near Fiddown.

The second vehicle fled the scene, while the driver and sole occupant of the first car was left with severe injuries.

The man, aged in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.

His body was removed to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The local coroner has been notified of the incident.

The section of road where the collision occurred is closed to traffic as Garda forensic investigators conduct an examination of the scene this morning.
