A man was yesterday charged with the murder of a mother of three whose body was discovered lying in a pool of blood in her home on Easter Sunday morning.

Derrick Daly (46), of St Vincent's Hostel, Cork, was formally charged with the murder of Catherine Smart (57) before Midleton District Court in east Cork yesterday.

Mrs Smart -- a separated mother of three -- was discovered lying dead in the kitchen of her home at Bailick Court, Midleton, at 10am on Easter Sunday.

The woman -- who had been out socialising on Easter Saturday night -- died from severe head injuries.

While gardai refused to release details of the post mortem examination, it is understood Mrs Smart had been beaten over the head with a hurley.

Judge Michael Pattwell was told by Detective Sergeant Joe O'Connor that Mr Daly was arrested at 9pm on Wednesday night in Cork city and brought to Anglesea Street station.

Det Sgt O'Connor said that after Mr Daly was cautioned and charged with Mrs Smart's murder, he told gardai: "Nothing to say."

Judge Pattwell granted free legal aid to Mr Daly and remanded him in custody to appear again before Midleton District Court on Thursday, May 20 next.
