A man in his 40s was dramatically recovered from sea by local boats in Mayo this evening - after being stranded in the water for almost four hours.

The 45-year old disappeared while out kayaking with two young children around Lough Conn.

He had been kayaking on a single a single sit, with the two children on a double, when he went missing.

The two children arrived onshore around Knockmore at around 6pm.

A local fisherman is believed to have initially located the man, who was then rescued by a number of boats and the coastguard helicopter.

He is understood to be hypothermic and was taken to Mayo University Hospital, where he is expected to be okay.
