A 21-year-old man has died after being involved in a hit-and-run smash in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The young Dubliner was walking along Parnell Road in Crumlin just before 2am when he was struck by the speeding car.

An eyewitness living on the street where the incident occurred said she was woken up by a loud bang and screaming on the street at around 1.30am.

"I thought it was a gun shot that had gone off and I stayed inside just in case," she said.

"I was terrified."

After the incident, the Dublin-registered dark blue Nissan Micra was badly damaged.

Following the crash, the driver fled the scene, leaving behind the smashed car and injured man.

The man was taken to St James's Hospital in a critical condition, but he died from his injuries in the afternoon.

An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident but was later released without charge.
