AROUND €550,000 has been raised for the Irish Cancer Society charity after Majella O'Donnell shaved her hair off on 'The Late Late Show'.

Such was the response to Majella's appearance on the programme last Friday night that the text lines, phone lines and website of the charity crashed under the weight of people trying to donate money.

Majella, the businesswoman and wife of singer Daniel O'Donnell, said she thought that if she raised €10,000, she would be doing well, but her husband said she should aim for €100,000.

She said the response has exceeded her wildest expectations.

Majella was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and recently started a course of chemotherapy.

Ryan Tubridy said the reaction she got on 'The Late Late Show' was the greatest he had seen in his time on the show.

Viewers of the show were invited to make donations through the website.
