Twenty-seven years of playing the same numbers in the Lotto have finally paid off for one lucky syndicate.

The seven people won the €5,900,958 fortune in Saturday's Lotto draw after buying a ticket at the Tesco store on Ash Road in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

The group, who wish to remain private, said they are set to split the winnings equally, each pocketing €842,994.

A spokesperson for the group said they have played the same numbers since the Lotto began in 1988.

"We’ve played the same numbers since Lotto began in 1988 and the most we’d won before was €56.  I knew those numbers would do us good one day," he said at the champagne reception.

"When I checked the ticket, I couldn’t believe it.  It still doesn’t feel real for us.  We’re delighted."

The winning numbers were 2, 5, 13, 17, 32 and 34.

It's the second major winning ticket for Mullingar within a few weeks, as a Co Westmeath couple won the Lotto Plus 2 top prize of €250,000 on Wednesday, May 20.
