A woman had a lucky escape after a car ploughed into the front window of the shop where she was working.

The worker had just popped into a room at the rear of the premises when she heard a loud crash and returned to find a car had smashed in almost the entire shop front.

The woman was unhurt while the driver of the Lexus saloon car also escaped injury. The incident happened at 2.15pm at Salon Select Hair and Beauty Supplies in the Parnell Street car park in Ennis, Co Clare.

It is understood the motorist had been trying to park in front of the shop and hit the accelerator pedal instead of the brake. The automatic car mounted the footpath and careered straight into the shop front, sending stock flying across the premises.

One passerby said: "I jumped a foot off the ground because the screech of rubber sounded so close. I thought someone had lost control on the corner but cars don't go fast here. I looked around and saw the car stuck in the window."

It was the third time in five months that a vehicle crashed into a shop front in Ennis.

One woman said: "This has happened before in town. Whatever it is about drivers and shop windows? I remember one headline saying 'only in Ennis'. Tomorrow it will probably say 'only in Ennis, again'."

Last November 13, firefighters were left stunned after they attended two almost identical incidents in a matter of hours.

A man was admitted to hospital after he accidentally reversed through the front of a busy Centra supermarket on the Gort Road in Ennis. Just a few hours later, another driver smashed into the window of a shop at a filling station on the Limerick Road in the town.
