Lucky escape for family after suspected arson attack sets house alight

A family had a lucky escape after an inferno destroyed their minibus and car and the flames spread to their home.

The terrifying incident happened in the early hours of Thursday morning last in Duleek in Co Meath in what is believed to have been a malicious attack.

The minibus and car are both thought to have been set alight in the driveway of the home on the Station Road at around 2am on Thursday morning last.

Neighbours rushed to the scene to help the family escape through the rear of the house as the fire took hold and began to damage the front of the building.

The fire brigade were quickly on the scene and managed to extinguish the fire before it spread to the interior of the house.

A spokesperson for the gardaí confirmed the matter is under investigation.

"I can confirm that there was a fire and both a minibus and a car were extensively damaged in the incident," said the spokesperson.

"Gardaí were at the scene and house to house inquiries were carried out."

He said Crime Scene Investigators were also present and carried out forensic examinations at the scene.

Debris from the fire was removed and has been taken for further analysis.

The garda spokesperson said CCTV footage from the scene will be examined and the area was canvassed for any other CCTV footage which may be useful in determining what happened.

He said garda enquiries are continuing.
