Low-income households face into hard winter

Michael Mchale

THE Government must act fast on energy poverty before the most disadvantaged are hit by extra fuel charges this winter, a new lobbying group has warned.

The Energy Poverty Coalition yesterday said that low-income households were facing a "winter of discontent" and would struggle to cope with the introduction of the carbon tax and a new energy levy, which will increase ESB bills by 5pc from next month.

The organisation is made up of members from other groups, including St Vincent de Paul and Age Action.
