Lotto luck as shop toasts third winner
RAINBOWS must end in a little newsagents shop in the west which has sold three major prizewinning Lotto tickets in just two years, write Grainne Cunninghan and Tom Gilmore.
News 'n' Choose in Loughrea proved it really has the Midas touch by selling one of the winning tickets of the weekend's €5.6m Lotto jackpot on Saturday afternoon.
But while owners Cherry and Jarlath O'Connor are excited by the latest visit from lady luck, they have no idea who the holder of the ticket might be.
The €8 ticket was bought by someone who selected their special numbers on Saturday.
Whoever the mystery player is, he or she is now almost €2.8m better off, sharing the multi-million jackpot with another unknown winner who bought their ticket in the south.
In December 2007, the same shop sold a ticket which resulted in somebody getting a windfall of €12.8m but the winner chose to remain anonymous. It was the second biggest jackpot claimed that year.
A few months later, another customer of the Loughrea shop won €250,000 but the money was never collected and went back into the National Lottery funds.
