Lottie brings breath of fresh air to youth awards
GERRY Ryan's daughter has taken up the fight against teenage smoking.
Lottie Ryan joined hundreds of youngsters at the Irish Cancer Society's X-HALE Youth Awards at the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin.
"One of the most important aspects of dealing with cancer is awareness and that's why I think it's so important to get involved in an event like the X-HALE Youth Awards," she said.
The event showcased movies made by 14 youth groups that highlighted the health problems attached to smoking.
Joanne Vance of the Irish Cancer Society said the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of smoking was at an all-time high.
"The tobacco industry would have you believe that smoking is cool or glamorous -- so we're taking a stand against the industry.
"We know that 80pc of young people start smoking before the age of 18, but 50pc of them start smoking before they turn 15.
"We have the youngest average in the EU," she said.
"This initiative is highlighting the health effects of smoking, while trying to get the information out there about the peer pressure teens go through."
