GALWAY Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins has announced that she plans to seek the party nomination for the upcoming European elections.

Ms Higgins, who had been hotly tipped to contest the elections in the 15 county Midlands-North West constituency confirmed today that she hopes to secure a spot on the Labour ticket in the upcoming elections.

Ms Higgins told that she had received significant support to run from within the party to run. She now plans to finalise matters with the party today before officially announcing her bid.

"I've received a lot of support from the Parliamentary Party to put my name forward. It's a huge undertaking and I wanted to ensure I had the support of my local base. I met with about 60 of them on Monday and they overwhelmingly backed me to run," she explained.

"I will meet with head office today to iron out a few things and it's certainly my intention to make it official after that," she added.

The barrister, who was nominated to the Seanad in May 2011, said she sees herself as the only Galway candidate putting themselves forward for the elections.

"I am the only one who is living in Galway and seeing the situation on the ground," she added.
