Long wait for brain surgery

MORE than 160 patients are waiting in excess of six months for brain surgery in Dublin and Cork, new figures reveal.

They are among a waiting list of 452 patients in need of neurosurgery in Beaumont Hospital and Cork University Hospital.

The figures come as Health Minister James Reilly told a conference in Dublin yesterday that around 700,000 people in Ireland have some form of brain disorder.

Addressing the conference, 'Healthy Brain: Healthy Europe' he said the challenge of diagnosing, treating and caring for those affected by brain disorders was daunting.
