INDEPENDENT TD Mick Wallace launched an emotional and angry attack on justice minister Alan Shatter.
Speaking in the Dail in response to Mr Shatter’s statement on allegations of mishandling by gardai of a number of serious cases, Mr Wallace repeated his calls for Mr Shatter and the garda commissioner Martin Callinan to resign.
He said the Dail would be a “sham” if the Justice Minister remained in his position, and lashed the house as “a joke”.
He also claimed that Mr Shatter’s statement was primarily motivated by “political survival”.
“Minister you look up here at us and you say: ‘How dare those people with their long hair and raggy jeans have the audacity to challenge you?” he said.
The speech has attracted discussion on this afternoon's Liveline on RTE. One of his constituents called in to praise the TD.
"We don't have too many politicians who are connected to the people," Sheila said.
"We need to be hearing the voices of the Mick Wallaces of the Dail. I hope more like him will join."
