Locals were left shocked after the body of a woman was found in the sea near a popular resort.

The woman's body was found off the coast of Bundoran in Co Donegal yesterday.

The body was discovered by people out walking at around 9am.

The victim has not yet been identified.

The body was taken to Sligo University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination was due to take place.

Gardaí immediately launched an investigation.

But they could not say whether the death appeared accidental or otherwise.

The results of the post-mortem examination will determine the direction the investigation will take, gardaí confirmed last night.

Meanwhile, local Sinn Féin councillor Michael McMahon said the shocking discovery was very upsetting to the local community.

"Everyone is in shock," he told the Irish Independent last night.

"We're very upset about this," he said. "Nobody knows what happened."

The shocking discovery was made by people out walking yesterday along the popular coastal trail known as Rougey Walk.

The 4.5km trail attracts hundreds of walkers and joggers every day, he said.

"Everybody is very saddened," he added.
