Locals were evacuated from their homes today after a piece of historic artillery shell was discovered in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

Gardaí attended the scene and requested assistance from the Army Bomb Disposal Team, who arrived at the scene at approximately 2.15pm.

The team established a cordon around the area and evacuated local houses before conducting an initial assessment of the munition.

The shell was then transported to a "secure military location" for further exams before they disposed of the shell.

Gardaí officially declared the scene as safe at 3.15pm.

Historic munitions from early 20th century conflicts can still be discovered around the country.

Defence Forces are asking anybody who comes across anything suspicious to maintain a safe distance and to inform the gardaí, who will in turn request Defence Forces assistance.
