Local takes the helm at Rose of Tralee festival

Majella O'Sullivan

THE Rose of Tralee international festival has a new leader at the helm -- local man Oliver Hurley.

A musical theatre director by profession, Mr Hurley has been involved in the festival since becoming operations manager in 2004.

Having grown up in the Co Kerry town, Mr Hurley said he never dreamed he'd one day be in charge of what has become one of Ireland's most successful festivals.

However, the new general manager said he's under no illusions about the challenges ahead and has appealed for continued local support.

He said we are "living through a challenging time and it is vital we continue to embrace the festival as a means of generating economic growth for the town".

Last year's Rose festival generated over €8m for the local economy. Over the five days of the festival, visitors to Tralee occupied in excess of 3031 rooms in eight local hotels.

This year's festival kicks off on August 19 and will culminate with the crowning of the 53rd Rose in the Dome on August 23.
