Gardaí have seized a loaded firearm as part of a crackdown on a crime gang involved in a west Dublin feud.

The loaded Makarov, which was fitted with a silencer, was found after a search of a wooded area near Waterville Road, Dublin 15.

The weapon is linked to a 22-year-old criminal leading a gang that is feuding with former associates of the Westies in the Corduff area of Blanchardstown.

An associate of the gang leader survived an attempt on his life last week when shots were fired at his car, while his child was in the rear seat. Both were unhurt.

Gardaí are aiming to prevent further violence and have seized weapons from both gangs.

However, a spate of non-fatal shootings, as well as petrol bomb attacks, have been carried out by both sides in recent months.

The handgun, silencer and seven bullets have been sent for testing.
