Detectives have launched a murder probe after a man was killed and his body dumped on a beach.

The 44-year-old was partially clothed when he was found with severe head injuries at the edge of Mornington beach in Co Meath.

A woman out walking her dog made the discovery.

Gardai have identified the Lithuanian - who was stabbed in the head several times with a blunt instrument - but have not released his name.

It is understood he moved to Ireland four years, was living in a homeless shelter in the area and was known to gardai for public order offences and drinking heavily.

Investigators are probing if he was killed during an fight elsewhere and his body dumped on the stretch of coastline between Lady's Finger Tower and Mornington Tower near the Boyne estuary a few miles from Drogheda.

Several hours after the body was discovered a second scene was inspected by gardai after reports of bloodstains outside a property on the Marsh Road area of the town, the most direct route to the Mornington area.

A number of houses next to an undertakers were sealed off and detectives carried out inspections of flats in one of the renovated buildings.

Superintendent David Taylor appealed for anyone who was in the Mornington beach area overnight, or anyone who noticed any altercation, row or unusual incident in Drogheda between 10pm last night and 9am today to come forward.

The area of the beach around where the body was found was sealed off for several hours after the alarm was raised at 9am.

Local roads, pathways used by walkers and scrubland were also closed to the public.

Teams of uniformed gardai and forensic officers combed the beach in the search for clues to how or where the man died.

State pathologist Marie Cassidy was called to the scene to carry out preliminary examinations of the body, which was later removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The area where the man's body was found was the scene of a gun murder in 2007.

Local man Roy Coddington, a 36-year-old father of three, was gunned down after meeting two men on the beach in a car as a German woman who was with a number of children looked on.
