Lifetime captured in an instant helps win top award

Patricia McDonagh

IT is an image that sums up the life of a much-loved veteran journalist, and last night it helped Mark Condren win a prestigious national award.

The 'Sunday Tribune' photographer's picture of Irish Independent journalist James Downey looking at artist Liam Delaney's interpretation of his face was part of a portfolio that scooped the Press Photographers' Association of Ireland AIB Photojournalist of the Year 2009 award.

The photo was printed alongside an interview with Mr Downey by 'Sunday Tribune' journalist Mick Clifford.

Mr Downey had just launched his autobiography 'In My Own Time: Inside Irish Politics and Society'.

A selection of 112 images, including pictures taken by Irish Independent photographers Tom Burke and Frank McGrath, will now tour AIB branches.

Mr Condren has recently been working in earthquake-hit Haiti, where he accompanied Irish Independent journalist Jason O'Brien.
