Liebherr staff strike

WORKERS at a crane manufacturing firm staged a rostered one-day strike over a pay claim dating back more than four years.

More than 300 of the 670 employees at Liebherr in Killarney, Co Kerry, had already initiated an overtime ban as part of their dispute with the company over a 2.5pc pay increase. The workers involved in the dispute, all members of SIPTU, lodged their claim in 2009.

CURRAN MEETS KENNY

THE partner of MS sufferer and right-to-die campaigner Marie Fleming, Tom Curran, has met with Taoiseach Enda Kenny after the HSE questioned her continued eligibility for a medical card.

Mr Curran said he held a "good frank conversation" with Mr Kenny for an hour after he previously rejected the possibility of legislation on the controversial issue. "She (Marie) wants people to understand her point of view and the way she lives and then make the decision themselves," said Mr Curran.

GUN SUSPECT QUIZZED

A suspect is being questioned by gardai investigating a shotgun attack on a 30-year-old man at Donore Road, Drogheda, last Tuesday.

The victim was recovering last night after being hit by a shotgun blast in the thigh. Investigating officers detained a 26-year-old man yesterday and he was being questioned at Drogheda garda station.

DRIVER DIES IN CRASH

A MAN in his forties died from injuries he sustained when his car hit a pole in Dublin. The accident occurred at about 1.45am yesterday morning on the Churchtown Road Lower, in Dublin 14.

The male driver of the car was its sole occupant.
