Legislation on DNA database due next week
LEGISLATION to set up the long-awaited DNA database of criminals is set to be published next week. The Cabinet has approved the publication of the draft bill for the database, which is set to revolutionise the detection and prevention of rape and sexual assault.
The database will hold a DNA profile of everyone convicted of a crime which attracts a sentence greater than five years. Gardai will also be able to access databases in other EU countries and the United States and share information contained in the Irish system.
A Government spokesman said it would help combat high volume crimes such as burglaries and car thefts – which are often carried out repeatedly by the same people – and assist in the identification of bodies.
