IRELAND'S outgoing European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, has been awarded France's highest honour.

Ms Geoghegan-Quinn received the Legion d'Honneur in Brussels in recognition of her "major role" in the setting up of Horizon 2020, an €80bn science, research and innovation programme.

French Minister for Research and Higher Education Genevieve Fioraso, who presented the award on behalf of French President Francois Hollande, said the programme "will be a central driver for the economic recovery process in Europe as it will create both high-skilled jobs and new goods and services".

Ms Geoghegan-Quinn previously served in a number of ministries including Justice, Tourism and Equality.
