Legendary Sonia takes on triple challenge
OLYMPIC legend Sonia O'Sullivan has mastered the running track -- and now she's setting her sights on the world of triathlons.
The former world champion and Olympic silver medallist faces a fresh challenge later this month when she takes part in the TriMonkstown triathlon.
The tough event, which takes place across from Ms O'Sullivan's native Cobh, will see her don her swimming cap for a 750-metre swim and mount a bike for a 20km cycle.
The triathlon finishes with a 100-metre sprint that should be no problem for a woman who was famed for her ability to speed past opponents in the final stages of the 5,000 metres.
Ms O'Sullivan, who spends most of the year Down Under, has been training hard. "Although I have been hibernating in the Australian winter, I have been keeping myself busy training for my first-ever triathlon. I am training three times a week in the swimming pool, and have enjoyed some great hilly bike rides," she said.
The June 17 event aims to raise €8,000 -- to be split between the Irish Heart Foundation and Monkstown Amenity Association.
