Laughter by the lake for monks on retreat

Buddhist monks are pictured by Valerie O'Sullivan enjoying some free time after a walking meditation near Lough Lein, at The Lake Hotel, Killarney, Co Kerry, yesterday.

They are in Kerry to take part in a Mindfulness Ireland Living Today event, which was held at the Gleneagle Hotel's convention centre.

More than 700 followers of Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh (85) took over the popular centre for a private retreat.

The monk is known as 'Thay' (Vietnamese for teacher) and he stresses the joys of the present moment.

Fifty monks and nuns led the retreat with him.
